Interior AI alternatives: what to look for, and where Decorous fits

By the Decorous team. First published October 29, 2023, rewritten October 2026.

InteriorAI.com made "upload a photo of your room, pick a style" popular, and plenty of tools now do something similar. If you're shopping for an alternative, the differences that matter aren't in the marketing. They're in what happens to your room.

We make Decorous, so we're not neutral. Below is what we'd check in any AI room design tool, including ours, and an honest note on where Decorous is a good fit and where it isn't.

What to look for

Does it keep your room?

This is the big one. Some tools redraw the whole image and the result is a nice room that isn't yours: windows move, a door appears, the ceiling gets taller. Try a photo with a distinctive window or fireplace and see if it survives. If you'll use the image for anything real, like a listing or a purchase decision, the architecture has to stay put.

Can you control how much changes?

Sometimes you want a light refresh with your layout kept; sometimes a full makeover. Look for a setting that controls how far it goes, and a way to change just the walls.

Can you fix one thing?

The first result is rarely perfect. A tool that lets you type "remove the TV" or "make the sofa green" and changes only that saves you from rerolling the whole room.

Does it handle the job you have?

Redesigning a room you live in, staging an empty listing, clearing out a furnished room and refreshing the outside of a house are different jobs. Staging needs a room type (so a bedroom gets a bed) and, for listings, a way to label the photo. Check that the tool does the job you need, not just generic redesigns.

Phone or browser?

Web tools are handy on a laptop. A phone app is handier when you're standing in the room, or showing a seller during a walkthrough, because the photo never has to leave the device you took it on.

Where Decorous is a good fit

  • It's built to keep the room. Decorous tells the model to keep walls, windows, doors, floors and the camera angle, and checks redesigns for moved windows and doors.
  • Six jobs, not one. Redesign in 19 styles, virtual staging with a room type, Declutter, Paint walls, Curb appeal and Backyard.
  • Typed edits on your results, with undo.
  • Made for listings too: Declutter for furnished rooms and an optional "Virtually staged" label.
  • On your iPhone, where the photos are.
  • We don't keep your input photos. They're used to make the result and not stored. See our privacy policy.

Where it isn't

  • It's iPhone and iPad only. There's no web or Android version.
  • It doesn't make floor plans or 3D models, and it doesn't measure rooms.
  • The furniture is generated, so there's no "buy this sofa" link.
  • It works from one photo at a time, not a whole house in one go.

If you need floor plans or shoppable furniture, a different kind of tool will suit you better. If you want to see your own room, staged or redesigned, from your phone, Decorous is worth a try.
